Exit Devices & Door Hardware – Q&A

Panic hardware is one type of exit device. Other common types include crash bars, panic bars, panic devices, and push bars. These devices are installed on the secure side of an out-swinging door, restricting access while allowing people to exit freely.

Exit devices were initially manufactured after a series of big fires in large buildings in the United States, which resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives.

There are three main types: The rim exit device (which is the most common; it’s mounted on the secured side of the door), the mortise lock style exit device (which offers a cleaner look, as it uses a lock body mounted within the door pocket), and the vertical rod exit device (available in surface mount or concealed versions, this device uses rods to connect the push pad to the top and bottom door latches).

Any high occupancy exit door can use an exit device. Our technicians install exit devices designed for nearly all door configurations. They’re compatible with wood, aluminum, and hollow metal doors (as long as the style of door is compatible with the device).

In a high occupancy building, all exit devices must adhere to local building codes and fire codes. Exit hardware may need to be ULC-Listed for fire risks and certifications. At Union Alarm, we can help with that; contact us for more information.

No! Our technicians can set up an egress delay system with alarms for certain corridors, but as a rule, exit devices cannot be manually locked, nor can they interfere with a building’s assigned path of egress.

Panic Bar vs Fire Exit Hardware

We’re going to clear up the differences between these types of exit hardware:

Panic bars are used on doors required to have panic hardware but aren’t certified for use with a fire-rated door. Fire exit hardware is tested for fire conditions and egress; it’s required for all fire-rated doors.

Fire-rated doors need UL/ULC-listed hardware and door closers. They must be self-latching and self-closing to ensure safety in a fire. They’re most often used in corridors and stairwells.

The right hardware for your building will depend on code requirements; to learn more, call Union Alarm today.

Egress Delay Systems:

To prevent door dash thefts and unauthorized egress in a retail store, businesses often use delayed egress control hardware. Once the door is depressed, an alarm will sound to notify all staff members.

There are certain specifications that an egress delay system must meet: The door cannot delay the public more than once during egress, and the maximum duration of delay must be 15 seconds or less.

At Union Alarm, we’re experts with fire exit hardware and panic bars.
